APE
PROVINCE
STEENBERG - Cape Town: (18 Hole and our personal favourite)
From the first day of play, Steenberg has received a deserved
reputation for its magnificent greens. This remains a fact several
years later - set under beautiful mountain surrounds and meandering
through the vineyards of one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms,
Steenberg is a classic.
The location of this Real Estate, hotel and golf course development,
nestling under the Constantiaberg Mountains in the Constantia
Valley, provides so many glorious views of vines, pine forest
and mountain flora.
Peter Matkovich was chosen to design the Steenberg Golf course.
His slogan, that good golf course architects “listen to the
land” proved ideal. Here he has followed the gentle natural
slopes of the estates and created a challenge by introducing
large waste bunkers, running creeks, water hazards and those
excellent greens.

We recommend the following accommodation:
Steenberg Hotel - Steenberg Hotel is situated on an
historic wine farm in the lea of the magnificent Stone Mountains,
ideally situated just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town.
It is a beautiful destination, which combines exquisite accommodation,
absolute serenity amongst the Constantia vineyards, a spa, superb
service, the renowned Catharina’s Restaurant, and an award winning
winery.
ROYAL CAPE – Cape Town: (18 Hole)
South Africa’s oldest golf club naturally portrays a sense of
history and tradition. Improvements to the single story clubhouse,
dating back to 1924, have merely served to enhance that sense
of tradition and cleverly blend it with the needs of today’s
golfer.
Established by Lieutenant General Sir Henry D’oyley Torrens
in 1885, the club received it’s ‘Royal’ title in 1910, following
a visit by the Duke of Connaught. All 18 greens were re-laid
to USGA specifications and planted with dominant bent grass.
The result was savoured by the professional golfers competing
in the players championship, held at the club in 1999, 2000
and 2001. Royal Cape provides players with an extremely good,
year-round, golfing experience as well as a comfortable off-course
experience.

We recommend the following accommodation: The Mount Nelson
Hotel - Nestling at the foot of Table Mountain and set in
nine acres of lush gardens, the Mount Nelson Hotel is one of
Cape Town's most elegant hotels offering unparalleled tradition,
history and luxury. The Hotel boasts four individual accommodation
wings, each with its own unique character, private gardens and
facilities.
Other recommendations: Cape Grace, The Table Bay Hotel and Highlands
Country Manor.
GOOSE VALLEY – Plettenberg Bay: (18 Hole)
The Goose Valley Golf Course is situated in pristine surroundings,
only 2km from Plettenberg Bay and bordering on the Keurbooms
Lagoon. This magnificent estate offers a Gary Player designed
72 par, 18 hole golf course in the heart of the Garden Route.
Immaculate fairways and first class greens are complemented
by the splendour of the natural environment. Truly memorable
though will be the sparkling vistas of the Indian Ocean that
may distract you from the focus needed to maximize the joy of
playing this great course.

We recommend the following accommodation: Kurland Country
Hotel - Set amidst emerald green pastures at the foothills
of the Outeniqua Mountains, and surrounded by paddocks, meadows
and immaculate polo fields, lies Kurland, a tranquil estate
and luxurious Country Hotel. Individually styled rooms each
have a magnificent bathroom, living area, couches and mini bars.
Other recommended accommodation includes Hunter’s or Tsala Country
Hotels and Emmily Moon Lodge.
We also recommend the following golf courses in the Western

*De Zalze – Kleine Zalze Wine Estate, Stellenbosch
*Arabella – Between Kleinmond and Hermanus
*Fancourt – Montagu Street, George
*Pezula – Lagoonview Drive, Knysna

WAZULU
NATAL
SELBORNE GOLF ESTATE South Of Durban: (18 Hole) (Own
page)
Regarded by many as one of South Africa's premier golf estates,
Selborne is perfectly positioned on South Africa's sub-tropical
"golf coast" - a mere 40 minutes drive south of Durban. Wild
coastal forest frames a superbly manicured course where the
only disturbance may be one of nature’s creatures. This magnificent
18 hole golf course, with its sweeping fairways, provides a
challenge for the more proficient golfer whilst also offering
the social player an enjoyable round.

We recommend the following accommodation: Selborne Hotel
& Spa - This sub-tropical retreat on the edge of the warm
Indian Ocean is only 30 minutes south of Durban International
Airport. A temperate climate and lush country setting ensure
exceptional leisure. The Selborne Hotel, Spa & Golf Estate welcomes
you to a very special lifestyle where all the cosmopolitan comforts
and high standards of a refined and exclusive estate are only
surpassed by the tranquil subtropical surroundings.
BOSCHOEK GOLF COURSE -
Balgowan: (9 Hole)
This very pleasant nine hole, 18-tee golf course has been designed
around a lake, dams, streams and a variety of trees in the KwaZulu
Natal Midlands. Boschoek is one of South Africa’s most picturesque
nine-hole courses. The charm of this delightful golfing experience
lies in the fact that it feels as though you are playing in
a private garden. Punch Barlow together with Bob Grimsdell,
designed and developed the course on the doorstep of his private
home on the estate. The first shot was played in 1963 and today
the course remains in private ownership - look out for glimpses
of the magnificent manor house as you walk through the course.

We recommend the following accommodation:
Granny Mouse Country
House - Hotel, Restaurant, Wellness Centre and Spa, is situated
in the heart of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. This Midlands Gem
is positioned at the gateway to the Drakensberg foothills, offering
upmarket accommodation on a Bed and Breakfast basis. All of
the Deluxe Cottages have a private balcony overlooking the beautiful
view of the surrounding hills and Lions River as well as a fireplace.
They have Victorian style en suite bathrooms with heaters.
MOUNT EDGECOMBE GOLF COURSE
– Umhlanga Area: (18 Hole)
Designed by leading architects, the two championship golf courses
are among the few in the country designed to USGA specifications.
Course1 combines attractive water features, multi-tiered greens
and forgiving roughs requiring accurate play and considered
a true test of target golf. Course 2 has undulating fairways
and a spectacular layout where serious golfers can test their
skills and an occasional golfer can thoroughly enjoy the game.
We recommend the following accommodation: Fairways Lodge
- Fairways Lodge is found on Mount Edgecombe Golf Estate, one
of the most prestigious and secure golf estates in South Africa,
nestling in rolling green hills and overlooks the 10th fairway
of Course Two. The Lodge with its luxurious accommodation, fine
cuisine and impeccable service, creates an exclusive retreat
for the golfer, leisure visitor, business person, congress delegate
or visiting dignitary. A stay at Fairways Lodge is an unforgettable
experience. We also recommend

Did You Know:
|
| Golf originated in Scotland,
and has been played for at least five centuries
in the British Isles. The oldest course in the world
is The Old Links at Musselburgh. Golf, in essentially
the form we know today, has been played on Scotland's
Musselburgh Links since 1672. While earlier versions
of the game had been played in the British Isles
and the low-countries of Northern Europe for several
centuries before that. Although often viewed as
an elite pastime, golf is an increasingly popular
sport across all sections of society. |
