Excerpt From The Amakhosi Lodge Monthly Ranger Report

Life is good for the lions right now and their menu is varied and easy as all creatures move closer to the water that is so precious right now. Our adrenalin surged that morning when a big male, enjoying his morning nap in the shade, shot up and tore past the side of my vehicle in hot pursuit of something. We spun around to see what had tempted his taste buds and were suddenly faced with an emotional dilemma. The baby giraffes spindly legs were working overtime as it tried desperately to catch up to its mother who had obviously decided that self preservation was the best option. I could feel my guests silently urging the young giraffe on as 240kg of muscle bound aggression was closing in fast. Just when I had decided that the lion would win this one, he stumbled in a gully, lost his rhythm and slowed down to a standstill. There he stood the King of Africa panting and glaring at what could have been as the giraffe disappeared out of sight. The signs of relief behind me brought a smile to my face as I was reminded of how emotional we as human beings can be. The consensus was unanimous that morning, the chase was better than a kill.
