Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Elephant in the Pilanesberg Game Reservelose to the major resort of Sun City in a 27km extinct volcano, is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This game reserve declared in 1979, is the third largest in the country. It now contains most of the mammals found in Southern Africa and over 300 species of birds. The main attraction of the park, apart from the game, is the man-made lake called Mankwe meaning place of the leopard. Many visitors to Sun City take a short safari in the Pilanesberg.

Pilanesberg exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.
